A week-to-week update on our homework
Literature Circles Discussion
Make sure you have now read two thirds of your book. Make a Text-to-World connection: what are the big issues or main themes within the book? For instance, your book may be about grief and dealing with your feelings when someone you love dies. Write a paragraph to outline what you think the issues of the book are and why, by explaining with examples from the book. Be prepared to talk about this topic with your group including your thoughts, feelings and opinions in relation to the world
Literature Circles Discussion
Finish reading 1/3 of your Literature Circles book (closest to the end of the nearest chapter). Prepare two paragraphs of writing, ready to share with your teacher and the group when it is your turn for discussion. This week we are focussing on the characters within the book. Choose one or two to study in detail. What are they like? How would you describe them physically and what sort of behaviour do they exhibit? What sort of person are they? This will be the basis for your first paragraph. The second paragraph will be supporting evidence from the book for how you came to your conclusions. Include the page numbers, so we can all refer to it and see if our group agrees.
For instance, if I thought a character was caring, helpful towards others and selfless, I could reference it by writing "On page 37, there was evidence of this when [the character] gave his friend part of his lunch because although he was hungry, his friend did not have had any lunch at all and would be really hungry. He felt guilty that he had food and his friend did not. That was a selfless act."

Tessellations & Percentage Discounts
A reminder that the grid of your tessellating shape is due on Friday. The whole grid should be filled with your shape, even on the edges where the entire shape won't fit on the page. We are also expecting that your tessellations will be presented to a high standard.
Everyone in the class is also expected to find two real life examples when an item has been marked down by a certain percent. You may find these items in a store like Coles or Myer, or you can go online and find them. Once you have chosen your two items, use the app 'Show Me' to record yourself demonstrating how to find the new price of the items.

Mathletics Homework
New Mathletics tasks have been added to for homework this week. The tasks are a continuation of the work we have been doing in class on Cartesian planes and the translation, reflection and rotation on shapes. It is expected that everyone gets at least 80% on all three tasks.
The Giving Tree
Read the printed story 'The Giving Tree'. Take on the Literature Circles role of the Discussion Director. Think of approximately 6 open-ended, quality questions that would stimulate discussion about the text. To help you, you could think about the possible messages of the story or what the characters may represent within the text. We will be sharing and discussing our thoughts as a class on Friday, so make sure you have your questions ready.
Production Practice
Your homework for this week is to ensure you know all of your lines for production. Please learn your lines so that you do NOT need a script this week. Keep singing those songs so you know all of the words!
News Report
Just a reminder that our news report script is due tomorrow. The news report will focus on your maths country and will include an introduction, a description of your countries culture and an analyse of your graphs.
Maths and Production
Use your iPad to open the 'Trip Around the World' investigation sheet. Find answers to each of the questions or categories. This information will be used for our Maths 'Trip Around the World' unit as we link Maths with Integrated Studies and learn about other countries and how children live around the world.
Continue to practise, practise, practise, your singing, dancing and acting for the production. We want this show to be FANTASTIC and the way to do that is to put in a huge amount of EFFORT!

Continent Research Assignment
Your task for homework this week is to research your given continent. A continent is a body of land that is made up of several different countries. For your continent you will need to find the information listed below and think of a way that you can present it to the class. An example of the information to include in your presentation will be shown in class. This assignment is due on Friday the 31st of July.
· Where is your continent located?
· How many countries make up your continent?
· List some of the well-known countries from your continent.
· What percentage of the world’s population live on your continent and how many people is that?
· What are the common languages spoken on your continent?
· List 5 interesting facts about your continent.

Mathletics- Integers
As we have been learning about integers in class, four Mathletics tasks have been set that will help you practise and consolidate the learning we have been doing in class.
Volume
Our homework this week is to investigate the volume of three different objects around the house. The students will need to find three different objects; a small, a medium and a large and find the measurements and capacity of each. The large object will be their bedroom, but the other two will be up to the students to find. The expectation is that they will have a photo of the object, the measurements of the height, width and length of their object and its volume.
Using the order of operations (BODMAS) and the numbers 4, 4, 4 and 4, everybody needs to find at least 25 different combinations that equal any number between 1 and 50 (each number can only be included once). For an extra challenge, try to complete all 50!
Just a reminder that the Literature Circles homework is also due on Tuesday.

ANZAC: 100 Years
By next Friday, it is expected that everyone will have finished every task for their dossier up to chapter 12 of our book 'Soldier Boy'. There effort that every student has put into their dossiers has been outstanding and I am sure that this will be a collection of work that the students will keep for the years to come.
